Names Have Real Meaning

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart….. ” Jeremiah 1:5

Your name is powerful and can describe some of your characteristics. Our name is usually the first prophetic word spoken over us. Holy Spirit communicates personal encouragement through names and may even use it to reveal your calling. We can use the meaning of our name as a powerful prophetic weapon and declare who we are called to be over ourselves. The enemy will try to get us to accept and partner with the opposite of what we are called to be. God wants us to succeed and know we are loved and chosen by Him.

In the Bible many people had names with meanings that directly related to who they were. If someone was given a new name many times it was to represent a change in who they were in spirit or to signify what they meant in the eyes of the King. There are so many examples of how names have real meaning, purpose and destiny.

Be encouraged today by looking up your name if you have not done so already. You can even do this with your middle and last name. Prophesy over yourself. Prophesy over your children’s names. Declare the truth of its meaning and calling. They are the next generation and a light to the world. Even if a name has a negative meaning behind it. There is redemption. Use the opposite of its meaning, turn it around and release a positive word. Declare it. Holy Spirit will reveal a unique word from your name, different than others that share the same name as you. There is the meaning and then there is the revelation you are given through prayer that God speaks to each of us differently with our own personal understanding and meaning. This is the piece that speaks into the deepest parts of our heart.

Here are some examples of names in the bible:

Noah- Rest, Comfort

Jesus- God Saves

Abraham- Father of Many

Ezekiel- God Will Strengthen

Hannah- Favor, Grace

Matthew 1:21—She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus—because he will save his people from their sins.”

Ethan: Firm, enduring, strong

My son Ethan who passed away at 4 months had a skin disorder called Epidermolysis Bullosa. He went through a lot of suffering and pain. Yet he was so calm in comparison to my other babies. His life impacted many all over the world. After my son passed away my family and I got closer to God and as a family we completely surrendered to Him and pressed into our calling for God’s amazing will and purpose.

For my name. The meaning of Norma means “From the North”

North in the Bible symbolizes the place of the throne of God.
My name is a constant reminder that I am from the house of my Father. I represent my Father where ever I go. Jesus has made me free to serve the Kingdom I am from and his authority to bind and loosen things on earth have been given to me.
